AI SEO: How to Appear in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT Answers

· 5 min read · Tatitech

More of your buyers now start their research by asking an AI: Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity. Instead of ten blue links they get a summarised answer with a handful of cited sources. “AI SEO” (also called GEO or AEO) is the work of making your business one of those sources. There is no secret switch, and nobody can guarantee a mention — but there is a lot you can do to improve your chances.

  • Answers before clicks. Many simple questions are answered on the results page or in the chat itself. Fewer clicks happen for basic informational queries.
  • Fewer, more qualified visits. People who do click through from an AI answer have often already compared options and tend to arrive closer to a decision.
  • Sources are chosen per answer. AI systems retrieve pages they consider relevant and trustworthy for that specific question, then cite some of them. Being cited depends on having content that answers the question clearly.
  • Your reputation is read from the whole web. Assistants form a view of your business from your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, press and forums — not just your homepage.

What stays the same

The good news: the foundations of AI SEO are the foundations of good SEO. Google has said that the same best practices apply to AI features in Search, and that there are no special extra requirements to appear in them beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

  • Helpful, people-first content written by people who know the subject
  • E-E-A-T signals — experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust: named authors, real projects, credentials, clear company details
  • Technical health — indexable pages, fast loading, clean HTML, sensible internal linking
  • Relevance — pages that match what your buyers actually ask

If your site is weak on these, no AI-specific tactic will make up for it.

How to improve your chances of being cited

1. Write clear answers to real questions

Collect the questions your sales team hears every week: lead times, typical budgets, regulations, how the process works, how options compare. Answer each directly near the top of a relevant page — a short, quotable answer first, then the detail. Use question-style headings where natural, and FAQ sections that reflect genuine queries rather than padding.

2. Add structured data

Schema markup helps search engines understand what a page is about. Useful types for B2B and high-ticket businesses include Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, Product, Article (with author), BreadcrumbList and, where appropriate, FAQPage. Structured data does not guarantee a feature or a citation, but it removes ambiguity. Keep it accurate and consistent with the visible content.

3. Keep your entity consistent everywhere

AI systems need to be confident that “your business” is one clearly defined entity. Use exactly the same business name, address, phone number and website across your site, Google Business Profile, Companies House, industry directories, social profiles and supplier listings. Inconsistent names or old addresses create doubt.

4. Look after your Google Business Profile

For local and regional searches, your Business Profile is a major source of facts: categories, services, opening hours, photos, reviews and responses. Keep it complete and active, and encourage genuine reviews from real customers.

5. Earn citations and mentions

Being referenced by trade associations, industry publications, partners, local press and respected forums builds the external evidence that you are a credible source. Focus on genuine expertise: technical guides, original project write-ups, comments for journalists, talks at industry events.

6. Make content easy to extract

  • One topic per page, with a descriptive title and H1
  • Short paragraphs and descriptive subheadings
  • Tables for comparisons and specifications
  • Concrete facts (dimensions, standards, lead times, process steps) rather than vague claims
  • Dates on time-sensitive content, and updates when things change

7. Check you are not blocking crawlers by accident

Review your robots.txt and any firewall or CDN bot settings. Blocking search crawlers keeps you out of search; some AI providers also use separate crawlers, and whether to allow them is a business decision. Make it deliberately rather than by default.

AI SEO checklist

  • Top 20 buyer questions answered clearly on relevant pages
  • Named authors and real credentials on expert content
  • Organisation/LocalBusiness, Service and Article structured data, validated
  • Identical business name, address and phone across the web
  • Complete, active Google Business Profile with genuine reviews
  • Listings in the main industry directories and associations
  • Pages fast, indexable and internally linked
  • robots.txt and bot settings reviewed deliberately
  • AI referral traffic tracked in GA4

How to measure AI referrals in GA4

Measurement is imperfect, but you can see a good part of it.

Source How it appears What you can do
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude Referral traffic from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai Create a custom channel group in GA4 with an “AI assistants” channel matching these domains by regex
Google AI Overviews / AI Mode Counted within Google organic search; not separated in GA4 Watch overall Search Console trends for impressions, clicks and queries
Assistants that strip the referrer Often shows as Direct Watch for rises in direct traffic to deep pages, and ask new leads how they found you

Then treat AI assistants like any other channel: track the enquiries it produces as key events and compare lead quality with your other sources. If you need help setting this up, see our Google Analytics and Tag Manager service.

What not to do

  • Do not mass-produce thin AI-written pages targeting every possible question; Google’s spam policies cover scaled, low-value content.
  • Do not add structured data that does not match the visible page.
  • Do not trust anyone who guarantees placement in AI answers. Nobody controls them.

Key takeaways

  • AI SEO builds on classic SEO: helpful content, E-E-A-T and technical health still come first.
  • Clear answers to real buyer questions are the content most likely to be cited.
  • Structured data, a consistent business identity and a strong Google Business Profile reduce ambiguity.
  • Mentions and citations from credible sites matter more than ever.
  • Track AI referrals in GA4 with a custom channel group, and judge the channel by enquiries, not visits.
